The City of Carpinteria holds its free ABOP Disposal Program twice a month, and this month’s are scheduled for Sept. 10 and 24 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. ABOP stands for Antifreeze, Batteries, Oil and Paint because those are among the materials accepted. CANCELED: Candlelight Vigil to Honor World Suicide Prevention Day
HopeNet of Carpinteria has canceled its annual Candlelight Vigil on Sept. 10 due to the high likelihood of rain during the outdoor event. The event recognizes World Suicide Prevention Day, and organizers look forward to holding it next year.
HopeNet of Carpinteria is a local, grassroots suicide prevention group of volunteers. It is a Community Partner of the City of Carpinteria. For more information about the vigil, contact Becki Norton in Spanish or English at (805) 507-7933 or hopenetofcarp@gmail.com.
City Uses Generator for Power
The City of Carpinteria has joined numerous other public agencies in California by getting off the electrical grid and using generators during peak hours in response to the Governor’s Proclamation of a State Emergency. We apologize for any nuisances caused by the use of generators, but keeping our agency functional without further stressing the power grid is imperative during this heatwave. We thank everyone for doing their part by continuing to reduce power use during peak hours: 4 to 9 p.m.

We thank our hard-working City employees and hope they are enjoying a day of R&R. We also thank all the rest of the workers who keep our children educated, our homes safe, our products manufactured, our shops and restaurants staffed, our art created and all the other tasks that ensure our quality of life. In honor of Labor Day, City Hall is closed and will reopen tomorrow, Tuesday, Sept. 6.
Palms Concept Not to be Reviewed at Sept. 6 Meeting
The previously scheduled review of the concept use/development plan for the Palms building will not take place at the Planning Commission meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 6. The regular meeting is still scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at City Hall, 5775 Carpinteria Ave., and will include a hearing to consider an easement for the construction of Groundwater Monitoring Wells proposed by Carpinteria Valley Water District.
In accordance with State guidance, the City will provide both in-person and virtual attendance and participation options for the meeting. Members of the public may attend the meeting at City Hall, 5775 Carpinteria Ave. or view the meeting live at www.carpinteria.ca.us, on Government Access Television Channel 21 or by logging into the Zoom webinar.

Flex Alert: Sept. 2
Another Flex Alert has been issued for today Friday, Sept. 2 from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. due to the high temperatures pushing demand on the electrical grid. Consumers are urged to conserve power during the Flex Alert to reduce stress on the grid and help avoid rotating power outages. Additional Flex Alerts are likely to be issued throughout this heat event. The National Weather Service’s Excessive Heat Warning is in effect for Carpinteria through Monday, Sept. 5 at 8 p.m.
Community Pool Announces September Closures
Carpinteria Community Pool’s September calendar includes closures due to Labor Day and the Carpinteria High School water polo game schedule. We apologize for any inconveniences caused by the following closures: Monday, Sept. 5 in observance of Labor Day, and beginning at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 6; Thursday, Sept. 15; and Thursday, Sept. 22 to allow for CHS water polo matches.

Wednesday’s Flex Alert has been extended to today Thursday, Sept. 1 from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. due to the high temperatures pushing demand on the electrical grid. Consumers are urged to conserve power during the Flex Alert to reduce stress on the grid and help avoid rotating power outages. Additional Flex Alerts are likely to be issued throughout this heat event.
From 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.:
- Set thermostat to 78 degrees or higher, if health permits
- Avoid using major appliances and charging electric vehicles
- Turn off all unnecessary lights
Before 4 p.m.:
- Pre-cool home by setting the thermostat to as low as 72 degrees
- Use major appliances
- Charge electric vehicles
- Adjust blinds and drapes to cover windows
TV Santa Barbara seeks part-time producer
TV Santa Barbara, the region’s community access media center since 1975, is seeking a dependable, creative and detail-oriented producer to handle government meeting broadcasts in Santa Barbara and Carpinteria. This part-time position, with room for growth, will manage the programming and recording of live public meetings, scheduling of replays and assisting in the creation and updating of bulletin board systems. A background or degree in media, communications and/or video production and 1-2 years of professional experience is required. Most of the productions will take place in the early evenings and a majority of the broadcasts will take place in the City of Carpinteria. Carpinteria residency would be ideal.
