September is Suicide Prevention Month

The City of Carpinteria recognizes September 2022 as Suicide Prevention Month. Suicide is a public health problem, and prevention is a community responsibility. Worldwide there are more deaths by suicide than homicide and war combined. Mental health experts strongly believe that suicide is preventable through awareness, education, support and treatment. At its Sept. 12 meeting, the Carpinteria City Council voted to recognize September as Suicide Prevention Month and acknowledged that efforts must be made all year long to reduce the rate of suicide. The City works collaboratively with Santa Barbara County Department of Behavioral Health and HopeNet of Carpinteria in their important efforts to prevent suicide.

Rainfall Brings Stormwater Risks

With rainfall predicted across the region, Santa Barbara County Environmental Health Services reminds residents about potential health risks associated with stormwater runoff at countywide beaches. Current estimates project rainfall starting this evening today through Sunday in Santa Barbara County. Storm water is untreated rain water that flows through the drain system into creeks, the ocean, and other waterways. Contact with storm water while swimming or surfing may increase the risk for certain types of illnesses such as rashes, fever, chills, ear infections, vomiting, and diarrhea.

Unlike the municipal sewer system, water carried by a storm drain system is not treated. To minimize potential health risks, it is recommended that people do not swim, play or surf in the ocean and creeks for at least three days following a rain event.  Beachgoers should also avoid areas near the outfall from drainpipes and creeks that enter the ocean following a rain event as storm water runoff may carry high levels of bacteria and pollutants.

The County of Santa Barbara implements a variety of programs to protect public health and enhance environmental quality of County watersheds and beaches. Working to improve water quality by reducing or treating sources of pollution is a multi-faceted task.

City Uses Generator for Power

The City of Carpinteria has joined numerous other public agencies in California by getting off the electrical grid and using generators during peak hours in response to the Governor’s Proclamation of a State Emergency. We apologize for any nuisances caused by the use of generators, but keeping our agency functional without further stressing the power grid is imperative during this heatwave. We thank everyone for doing their part by continuing to reduce power use during peak hours: 4 to 9 p.m.
