The Carpinteria Community Tennis Courts are now open and free for use on a first-come, first-served basis on Sundays. Pickleball players must bring their own gear, including nets, on Sundays. During the rest of the week, tennis and pickleball players may access the courts by making a reservation online at https://carpinteriaca.gov/parks-and-recreation/ and going through the Carpinteria Community Pool at 5305 Carpinteria Ave. to pay and pick up pickleball equipment and access information. A virtual community town hall will be held on Aug. 17 at 7 p.m. to provide information about Monkeypox. Kristin Flickinger, Executive Director of Pacific Pride Foundation, will moderate a panel of local public health experts and community leaders. Spanish and Mixteco interpretation will be provided. The Carpinteria Writers Group is free and open to the public. Poets, novelists, bloggers, nonfiction writers, short story writers as well as people working on their memoirs are all welcome. Some members are published, others wish to be, and some write for their own amusement or to pass on their history to family members.

Those who want to read may do so; their time is limited only by the number of other members wishing to read. The group members can then comment on the pieces with supportive and helpful suggestions. Are you looking for some furry companionship? We are looking for foster families for stray pets found in Carpinteria. There is currently a foster family shortage in Carpinteria, and we would like to meet with Carpinterians interested in volunteering. The ideal foster parents are comfortable with animals, able to walk dogs and have a secure yard and indoor area suitable for pets. Come try our swim team for free! Ages 5-17 are invited to a Carpinteria Aquatics Club swim team try-out on Tuesday and Thursday, Aug. 16 and 18, from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Try-outs will take place at the Carpinteria Community Pool, 5305 Carpinteria Ave. Participants must be ready to swim laps; this program focuses on teaching stroke techniques and is not a “learn to swim” program. Carpinteria is celebrating National Night Out on Wednesday, Aug. 10 from 6 to 9 p.m. on the 800 block of Linden Avenue. This free community-focused event gives attendees an opportunity to meet and interact with representatives from a variety of agencies that provide law enforcement and other public services. Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office is hosting the fun and educational event where there will be activities for young and old.

The City of Carpinteria Aquatics Team congratulates our Standout Staff Member for the month of July, Solomon Nahooikaika-Anderson. Solomon has worked for the City in many roles such as pool lifeguard, beach lifeguard and junior lifeguard instructor. When he is not working, Solomon enjoys hiking, eating sushi burritos and spending time with friends. Solomon is younger than his twin brother by 23 minutes, and he is currently watching “One Piece.” One of our Junior Lifeguard participants described Solomon as “an amazing lifeguard” and another added that “he is also really fast.” Solomon was a Carpinteria Junior Lifeguard as a kid and stated, “that’s why I became a lifeguard, because I wanted to be a part of the team that I looked up to as a kid.” Solomon is currently studying communication at UC Santa Barbara. Thank you Solomon!

We have two positions we are seeking applicants for: Accounting Specialist and Finance Manager. Both are full time and include a comprehensive employee benefit package. Our Accounting Specialist assists with various accounting duties in the preparation and maintenance of financial records and reports, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, purchasing, business licenses and petty cash. The Finance Manager performs a variety of complex financial duties, including managing the preparation of the City’s annual budget and ACFR report, maintaining the City’s general ledger, and overseeing staff involved in payroll, accounts payable and receivable, and customer service.
