January proclaimed Human Trafficking Awareness Month

On Jan. 8, the Carpinteria City Council proclaimed January 2024 as Human Trafficking Awareness Month. California has the most reported cases of human trafficking in the U.S and, as explained by Elsa Granados, Executive Director of Standing Together to End Sexual Assault (STESA), Santa Barbara County’s place between Los Angeles and San Francisco brings the area an unexpected “focus on that kind of exploitation.” By establishing this month of awareness, the city hopes to inform residents of the crime’s prevalence and increase knowledge about resources available to victims. STESA’s 24-hour hotline is available at (805) 564-3696.
