Sandbag Station

The City of Carpinteria offers a self-service sandbag station to help residents prepare for rainy weather and reduce the risk of minor flooding around homes and properties.

Preparing early is the best way to stay ahead of storms. Residents are encouraged to pick up sandbags before heavy rain arrives and only take what they need so supplies remain available for others.

How to Use

Bring Supplies! Residents should bring their own gloves and a shovel, if available. The station is self-service.

1. Fill Bag

Fill each sandbag ½ to ⅔ full with sand.

2. Close Bag

Tie or securely close the bag.

3. Place Sandbags

Place sandbags where needed to help protect your property from flooding, such as near doorways, garages, or other low-lying areas.

Helpful Tips

  • Take only the number of sandbags you need.
  • Sandbags are intended for flood protection only.
  • Sandbags may help reduce minor flooding but may not prevent flooding during severe storm events.
  • Residents are responsible for filling, transporting, and placing their own sandbags.
  • Do not place sandbags in the street, gutter, or storm drains

Make Sure to Prepare Early!

Sandbags work best when placed before water begins to rise. Please prepare ahead of forecasted storms whenever possible.

After the Storm

If sandbags did not come into contact with floodwater, they may be saved and reused for future storms.

If sandbags came into contact with floodwater, they may contain bacteria, chemicals, or other contaminants and should be handled with care. Wear gloves when moving used sandbags and dispose of them properly.

Sandbags are just one part of storm preparedness. Residents are also encouraged to sign up for emergency alerts, prepare an emergency kit, and create a family emergency plan.
