City honors June 19 as Juneteenth Freedom Day

The City of Carpinteria recognizes June 19 as Juneteenth Freedom Day, commemorating the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Texas finally learned of their freedom. We understand that the struggle for true equality is ongoing and that the deep impact of slavery echoes into Black lives today.

Systemic racism continues to affect Black residents in Carpinteria and Santa Barbara County. Juneteenth is a time to remember this history, celebrate Black contributions, and commit to ending racism.

The City observes Juneteenth as a holiday and encourages residents to learn about Black history and work towards an anti-racist future. Join us in celebrating Juneteenth!

Keep our wildlife safe, give harbor seals space

Carpinteria’s harbor seal rookery is a special place that offers critical safety and rest for the marine mammals that spend much of their time in the water. For this reason, it’s imperative that members of the public avoid disturbing the animals even during the June-through-November period when the beach is open.

Please use the blufftop trail, keep dogs on leash, and generally stay far away from the Casitas Pier. The seals can be viewed (quietly) from the bluff above the rookery which is easily accessible via the Coastal Trail (see map at https://carpinteriasealwatch.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/sealwatch.jpg).

Disturbing the seals is a violation of the Marine Mammal Protection Act and may result in fines up to $10,000 per occurrence. For more information, contact the City of Carpinteria at (805) 684-5405.

Thank you for helping us protect our local harbor seals.
