Carpinteria seniors, prepare your calendars! The August schedule for senior programs is now available and filled to the brim with fun, healthy, creative activities. Senior Socials will continue to be held at the Lynda Fairly Carpinteria Arts Center on Mondays and Wednesdays while the Veteran’s Hall hosts exercise classes and and other activities on Tuesdays and Thursdays. 3C-REN (Tri-County Regional Energy Network) has wide-ranging online classes and trainings available to help residents and businesses reduce energy use. On Aug. 1 from noon to 1 p.m., the organization is offering “Heat Pumps for Homeowners – Products and Selection,” a course taught by Larry Waters of Electrify My Home. On Aug. 15 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., “Passive House Windows” will be led by Steve Mann of the Passive House Network and Home Energy Services. On Aug. 22 from 9 to 10:30 a.m., “Home Electrification Planning – Class 1: Soup to Nuts” will be taught by Josie Gaillard and Tom Cabat, HES energy consultants. The City of Carpinteria is delighted to extend a warm invitation to celebrate the retirement of two remarkable directors, Parks and Recreation Director Matt Roberts and Community Development Director Steve Goggia. The event will take place on Monday, July 24, at 4:30 p.m. at City Hall.

The City of Carpinteria is in the process of creating a center and programming for seniors that will allow them to socialize, be physically active, pursue creative interests, and improve their overall well-being. As the next step in these efforts, the City of Carpinteria has released a request for proposals (RFP) for Program Design and Implementation Services for an Active Adult/Senior Center and related programming. The RFP will help the City find a consultant to research and develop a plan for providing active adult and senior services in Carpinteria. Services covered by the proposal must include a list of viable and fully vetted locations for a programming hub, a feasibility study for potential funding sources, staffing recommendations, a three-year action plan for implementation, and budget models based on a three-year timeline. The proposal may also include temporary support for managing the program, coordinating activities, working with volunteers, and scheduling. Proposals are due by Thursday, July 27. Jellies, the beautiful and bizarre drifters of the sea, will be the focus of a Carpinteria Community Library Summer Reading Program field trip to the Carpinteria State Beach Visitor Center on Thursday, July 27 from 3 to 4 p.m. Free and open to all ages, the afternoon program will include stories, crafts, science and lots of fun. To park for free, tell staff at the state park kiosk that you are attending the event. Don’t miss this chance to learn about the fascinating lives of jellies through fun and engaging activities!

The City of Carpinteria Aquatics team would like to congratulate T.J. Weir for being the Standout Staff Member for the month of July. This is T.J.’s first year working at the Carpinteria Community Pool, he is an outstanding swim lesson instructor and lifeguard. He is a junior at Cate School and has been living in Carpinteria for two years. T.J. has lived in four different US states, as well as Switzerland.  He runs cross country and plays soccer at Cate School. After he graduates, T.J. plans to study kinesiology and sports medicine. When he is not working or at school, he enjoys playing soccer and beach days.

Teens interested in developing essential skills for independence should register for Adulting 101 at the Carpinteria Community Library. The first session begins on Tuesday, July 25, and classes will be held on Tuesdays and Fridays from 4 to 5 p.m. for three weeks. Participating teens aged 13-17 will learn useful skills such as how to establish credit, apply for a job, ace an interview, understand insurance, maintain a savings account, manage a budget, etc. Classes are free, but registration is required. The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office is taking immediate action to address recent reports of shots fired on Linden Avenue near Malibu Drive on July 14 at approximately 9:30 p.m. No injuries were reported as a result of this incident, and an investigation is underway.

To enhance public safety throughout the weekend, there are increased patrols in the area, including additional personnel during the festival at St. Joseph Catholic Church.
