May is Asian American & Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month in Carpinteria! The City of Carpinteria honors the achievements of AAPIs in various fields while acknowledging the challenges they face.
Established in 1978, AAPI month coincides with the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants in 1843 and the completion of the transcontinental railroad in 1869, built partly with Chinese labor.
Generations of AAPIs have enriched Carpinteria’s culture and economy. The city recognizes the AAPI community’s 6.4% share of Santa Barbara County’s population and the historical contributions of AAPI families to Carpinteria’s growth.
Residents are encouraged to learn about AAPI issues and celebrate their achievements throughout May.
