January is Human Trafficking Awareness Month

The Carpinteria City Council designated January 2025 as Human Trafficking Awareness Month to raise awareness around the heinous crime that is more prevalent in Santa Barbara County than most residents realize.

Tiffany Carty, Victim Witness Program Supervisor with the Santa Barbara County District Attorney’s Office, accepted a proclamation from the City Council and noted that, “People often think about human trafficking being something that happens out there in larger cities without realizing that our neighbors, friends, students and at risk youth in our own backyards are frequently exposed to the pain of this trauma.”

Human trafficking is a form of modern slavery that occurs in every state. Victims are forced to work in various forms of labor exploitation including, but not limited to, commercial sex acts and other services that are induced through force, fraud or coercion.

Members of the public are invited to participate in the Vigil for Survivors on Wednesday, Jan. 29 at 5:30 p.m. at De La Guerra Plaza in Santa Barbara.

Receive emergency alerts through ReadySBC

Residents in the City of Carpinteria are strongly encouraged to register for the countywide ReadySBC Alerts system at https://member.everbridge.net/892807736723794/new.

This system is managed by Santa Barbara County’s Office of Emergency Management (OEM) in partnership with local cities, including Carpinteria.

Some residents have inquired about the creation of a separate, Carpinteria-specific alert system. While the City understands the desire for direct communication, we recommend that residents sign up for ReadySBC Alerts to ensure they receive timely and accurate information during emergencies.

The City is committed to enhancing emergency communication efforts through additional channels, such as social media updates, website alerts, and others, but creating a separate emergency alert system would require significant resources, ongoing maintenance, and coordination to ensure accuracy during critical events. Given the effectiveness and existing infrastructure of ReadySBC, it is more efficient to direct residents to the County’s system, which already serves Carpinteria.

Are you in a PSPS area of concern?

Southern California Edison has warned it may initiate a Public Safety Power Outage that affects Carpinteria residents.

To find out if your home is within the area of concern, visit the SCE webpage at https://www.sce.com/outage-center/check-outage-status. Type in your address to determine whether your home is within the areas under consideration for an outage.

These outages are intended to reduce the risk of fire ignition when dangerous weather conditions present themselves: heavy winds and low humidity.

In preparation for an outage, the City of Carpinteria and SCE have established a community resource center where residents can meet with SCE staff to have their questions answered. The community resource center will be open between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. and is located in the Veterans Hall Meeting Room at 941 Walnut Ave.

Vegetation clearing begins for bridge replacement

Vegetation clearing work began this week as a first step in the Carpinteria Avenue Bridge Replacement Project. Built in 1937, the Carpinteria Avenue bridge over Carpinteria Creek has been deemed structurally deficient and will be replaced with a new bridge that includes wider sidewalks, better visibility for drivers and improved creek flow capacity.

The work underway now is in preparation for the relocation of the overhead utility facilities, a precursor to bridge construction. Vegetation clearing is expected to take approximately three weeks and will only affect the north side of Carpinteria Avenue Bridge along the east and west creek banks.

The full replacement project is estimated to cost $10-$15 million dollars, 88.5% of which will be paid for through the Federal Highway Bridge Fund.
