Nico Kalin is our Aquatics Team’s Standout Staff Member

The City of Carpinteria Aquatics team announced that Nico Kalin is the Standout Staff Member for the month of September. Nico has worked for the city for five years in many roles, including pool lifeguard, beach lifeguard and Junior Lifeguard Instructor.  When he is not working, Nico enjoys surfing, sleeping and eating burritos. Nico was a Carpinteria Junior Lifeguard, and learned to swim at Carpinteria Community Pool. Thank you for all that you do, Nico!

City Council to Meet Oct. 24

The Carpinteria City Council will hold its next regular meeting on Monday, Oct. 24 at 5:30 p.m. In accordance with State guidance, the City will provide both in-person and virtual attendance and participation options for the meeting.

Members of the public may attend the meeting at City Hall, 5775 Carpinteria Ave. or view the meeting live at www.carpinteria.ca.us, on Government Access Television Channel 21 or by logging into the Zoom webinar.

  • Mayoral Recognition to David Griggs on his retirement as Director/Curator of the Carpinteria Valley Historical Society and Museum of History.
  • Approval of a consultant services agreement with Equity Praxis Group for assistance with the City’s Racial, Equity and Social Justice program, not to exceed $108,202.
  • An Agreement with Policore to provide Information Technology Management Services to the City of Carpinteria for a three-year not-to-exceed amount of $311,220.
  • Award of Contract for Electric Vehicle Charging Stations.
  • Approval of two appointments to the Downtown “T” Business Advisory Board.
  • Request of the Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Protection District for the City Council to provide comments regarding the District’s Draft Ordinance adopting the 2022 California Fire Code.
  • Approval and adoption of a resolution establishing administrative procedures for a Safe Parking Pilot Program, authorizing an operating agreement with New Beginnings Counseling Center that is not to exceed $94,000, and allocating a FY 2022-23 budget amount of $32,000.
  • Receive the Code Compliance Quarterly Report.

Night-time Power Outage Scheduled for Pole Replacement

Southern California Edison has announced a planned power outage beginning on Thursday, Oct. 20 at 8 p.m. and ending on Friday, Oct. 21 at 3:30 a.m. for approximately 111 customers in downtown Carpinteria. The planned outage will allow for pole replacement and upgrade work to be completed overnight. Approximate outage boundaries are Holly Avenue to the north, Linden Avenue to the south, Carpinteria Avenue to the east, Fifth Street to the west. Also, the work will require Ninth Street to be closed between Elm and Holly avenues between 7 p.m. and 4 a.m.

Get Connected and enter to win a Chromebook

This weekend, the Carpinteria Community Library will host a second event to help eligible families afford high-quality home internet at a lower cost AND enter to win one of five Chromebooks that will be awarded. Get Connected Carpinteria, an federal Affordable Connectivity Program enrollment event, will be held on Saturday, Oct. 22, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Library, 5141 Carpinteria Ave. Spanish language speakers will be available to help with the process, which should only take about 20 minutes. Please bring the following 1) identification, and 2) proof of eligibility in the form of a monthly WIC, MediCal or CalFresh statement, proof of enrollment in the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) at CEP designated school, or a Pell Grant Award Letter for the current year.

GSA Community Workshop Coming Up

The Carpinteria Groundwater Sustainability Agency will hold its next community workshop on Wednesday, Oct. 19, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Lions Park,  6197 Casitas Pass Road. The Carpinteria GSA is a public agency formed by a joint powers agreement between the Carpinteria Valley Water District, City of Carpinteria, Santa Barbara County Water Agency and County of Ventura to sustainably manage the groundwater in the Carpinteria Basin. Safe Trick-or-Treating returns to the Downtown “T”

Local merchants in the Downtown “T” will be ready to welcome little “Trick-or-Treaters” on Friday, Oct. 28 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. as they celebrate the Safe Trick-or-Treating in the Downtown “T”.  Members of the City’s HOST program will be handing out the orange pumpkin signs for participating businesses to display in the front window of their business. HOSTs will also give out candy at the Seal Fountain kiosk during the event.

After the Downtown “T” Trick-or-Treating event at 5 p.m., the Carpinteria Arts Center (855 Linden Avenue) will hold a costume contest co-hosted by Girls Inc. of Carpinteria, The Alcazar Theater, Carpinteria Children’s Project and Boys and Girls Club.

First introduced in 1997 to the Downtown “T” by Jane Sutton of Head to Toe Beauty Salon, the City’s Downtown-T Business Advisory Board and the Downtown Merchants have continued to sponsor the trick-or-treat event in Jane’s memory and in recognition of her contributions to the community and the downtown business district.

Eagle Scouts Honored by Council

At last night’s City Council meeting, Eagle Scouts Ian Thomas and Matthew Lamberti received Certificates of Commendation for completing important projects that benefit the Carpinteria community. To earn Eagle Scout rank, Thomas oversaw the construction of new stairs at Jelly Bowl beach, and Lamberti installed new tables in the picnic area at Carpinteria State Beach. The two young men thanked family members, the other members of Boy Schout Troop 50 and the donors who made the projects possible. Councilmembers thanked Thomas and Lamberti for their hard work, and Mayor Wade Nomura noted, “The attainment of Eagle Scout is very rare, very unique … congratulations for that.”

Special Meeting to focus on Housing Element

The Carpinteria City Council and Planning Commission will hold a joint meeting to consider the Draft 2023-2031 Housing Element Update on Monday, Oct. 17 at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall, 5775 Carpinteria Ave. The Housing Element is a component of the City’s General Plan and includes analysis of housing needs, opportunities and constraints, and impediments to fair housing. The policies and programs in the Housing Element address housing for all segments of the community and include strategies to accommodate the 901 additional residential units assigned to the City through the Regional Housing Needs Assessment process.
