City enacts new tenant protections

In an effort to protect renters, the Carpinteria City Council unanimously passed a requirement for landlords to issue relocation assistance payments to qualified tenants in the event of a no-fault just cause eviction. The payment amount is the equivalent of two month’s rent or $6,500, whichever is greater. Examples of no fault just cause evictions include situations in which a landlord evicts tenants to occupy the rental or to house close family members in the rental, or when a landlord evicts tenants to demolish or substantially remodel the rental unit. The new regulation comes as a result of recent rapid rises to housing costs and the heightened risk of low-income residents being displaced from just cause evictions.
