Council Designates April as DMV/Donate Life Month

The Carpinteria City Council recently designated April 2023 as DMV/Donate Life Month. By designating the month, the City recognizes that organ, eye, tissue, marrow and blood donation are life-giving acts that serve as expressions of compassion to those in need. More than 100,000 individuals nationwide and more than 20,000 in California are currently on the national organ transplant waiting list, and on average, 17 people die each day while waiting. California residents can sign up with the Donate Life California Donor Registry online at any time by visiting www.donateLIFEcalifornia.org or, for Spanish-speakers, www.doneVIDAcalifornia.org.

Adoption of the road maintenance and rehabilitation project list for 2023-24.

Approval of the 2023-2031 Housing Element of the Carpinteria General Plan as revised to address comments from the California Department of Housing and Community Development and other interested parties.

Addition of a chapter to the City of Carpinteria Municipal Code regarding prohibition of fuel gas infrastructure in new construction.

City Designates April as Carpinteria Business Month

Joined by representatives of the Santa Barbara South Coast Chamber of Commerce, the Carpinteria City Council designated April 2023 as Carpinteria Business Month. The Chamber of Commerce works alongside the City of Carpinteria to create a bridge between local business goals and those of City officials to implement positive economic, public health and safety, and environmentally protective public policies.

MTD Proposes Changes, Seeks Public Feedback

Santa Barbara MTD is proposing changes to its service and will host a set of public outreach meetings this April to provide information and collect feedback. Proposed changes include a new peak hour Line 19x (Carpinteria/SBCC Express) serving Carpinteria, Santa Barbara’s Eastside, and SBCC. A Carpinteria meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 18 at 6 p.m. at the Carpinteria Community Library, 5141 Carpinteria Ave. MTD also invites the public to learn more and to give feedback via an online survey that explains all the proposed changes at www.sbmtd.gov/servicechanges. The survey is available in English and Spanish. Annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection is Saturday, April 8

This year’s free Annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection event for the residents of Carpinteria will be held on Saturday, April 8 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at City Hall, 5775 Carpinteria Ave. Residents are invited to drive through and drop off items for disposal in the City’s Public Works Yard. Most items are accepted, though the following are NOT: biohazards, nuclear waste, explosives, and tires.

Planning Commission to Review Via Real Hotel Proposal

The Carpinteria Planning Commission will review a proposal for a two-story hotel at 4110 Via Real at its next regular meeting on Monday, April 3 at 5:30 p.m. Plans include demolition of the church building currently on the property and construction of a two-story, 72-guestroom, 44,191 square foot hotel and associated improvements.

In accordance with State guidance, the City will provide both in-person and virtual attendance and participation options for the meeting. Severe Weather Expected

Severe weather is expected in Santa Barbara County tonight, March 29, into early Thursday morning. The National Weather Service predicts an increased risk for thunderstorms with strong rain, significant wind speeds, lightning, hail, and a remote chance of small and brief tornados or waterspouts. Take steps to secure items that could be picked up by strong winds and be ready in the event of power outages. If severe weather occurs, people should seek shelter indoors, in the most interior room, away from windows. Remain vigilant and stay alert to changing weather conditions. Chamber to Honor Educators, Students and City Manager

At the Carpinteria Community Awards Gala on April 1, the Santa Barbara South Coast Chamber of Commerce will honor two local educators and three finalists for the Junior Carpinterian of the Year Award. This year’s event will also include a special recognition award to Dave Durflinger, who has served the Carpinteria community for the last 24 years as City Manager. This year’s educators are Matthew McPherson, a Special Education teacher at Aliso Elementary School, and Jennifer Foster, a math teacher at Carpinteria Middle School. Junior Carpinterian of the Year finalists are Carpinteria High School seniors Hugo Alvarado Carmona Aldair, Monica Adriana Delgado and Stephanie Ramirez Garcia. SCE to Close Carp Ave for Power Pole Work

Carpinteria Avenue will be temporarily closed west of Bailard Avenue for Southern California Edison (SCE) to work on power poles. The closures are tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, March 28 and Thursday, March 30. Please plan your commute or trips accordingly, and be prepared to expect delays.
