Swim Test Junior Lifeguards( ages 9 – 16):
Tread – 1 minute
Underwater push-off (no stroke) for 10 yards
100-yard freestyle swim in under 2:20

Swim Test Mini-Guards (ages 7 – 9):
Tread – 1 minute
Underwater push-off (no stroke) for 10 yards
50-yard freestyle swim in under 1:40

All swim tests take place at Carpinteria Community Pool (5305 Carpinteria Ave.), and you must sign up for a tryout date.

Registration Now Open for Junior Lifeguard Tryouts

Is your child interested in becoming a Junior Lifeguard? Sign-ups are now up for Junior Lifeguard (JG) tryouts, which will be held on multiple dates in April and May. Junior Lifeguards is a half-day summer program held at Carpinteria City Beach. Participants develop new aquatics skills, compete in friendly beach and ocean competitions, and deepen their appreciation and knowledge of marine and coastal ecosystems. Tryouts for the program are required for anyone who is a first-time JG or Mini JG participant. Children who have participated in mini JGs must tryout for JGs. Each child will be expected to complete a timed swim, a timed water treading test and an underwater push-off test. Tryouts take place at Carpinteria Community Pool, 5305 Carpinteria Ave., kids must be signed up for a tryout date and time in advance. Children who successfully complete the tryouts, and anyone who has already participated in JGs, may register for the program beginning on May 30. WE NEED LIFEGUARDS!

In order to provide Junior Lifeguard programming to Carpinteria kids this summer, the City of Carpinteria needs more lifeguards. Anyone interested in lifeguarding should email Leilanie at LeilanieS@ci.carpinteria.ca.us to schedule an interview. Applicants must be available for training June 13-18 at Carpinteria Beach. Sign Up for Junior Guard & Mini JG Try-outs

The City of Carpinteria is looking forward to another summer teaching aquatics skills and fitness to kids ages 9-17 through our Junior Lifeguards program. We are also excited to announce the first ever Mini Junior Guard program for children ages 7-9. Try-out for JGs and Mini JGs will be held April 2, 9, 16 and 30 at the Carpinteria Community Pool, 5305 Carpinteria Ave., and first-time participants MUST try out. Try-outs for ages 9-17 will include a 100-yard swim in under 2:20 minutes, a 1-minute water tread and a 10-yard underwater swim. Mini JGs will be expected to complete a 50-yard swim in under 1:40 minutes, a 1-minute water tread and a 10-yard underwater swim. JG Safety Aids benefit for generous donation

The City of Carpinteria’s Junior Lifeguards Program sends a huge thank you to the Carpinteria-Summerland Firefighters Association and Serigraph for donating custom printed rashguards for our Carpinteria Junior Lifeguard Safety Aids. These will help keep our safety aids sun safe all season!

JG and swim lesson registration opens tonight, May 30

With summer staffing in place, the City of Carpinteria is prepared to open registration at 6 p.m. tonight, May 30, for its summer Junior Lifeguards Program and swim lessons at the Carpinteria Community Pool. Parents/guardians are encouraged to register their children at https://carpinteriaca.gov/parks-and-recreation/junior-lifeguards/, though staff will also be available at the pool to help with registration between 6 and 7 p.m. tonight. Those who register online or in person with a card will be charged a 3.25% debit/credit card processing fee. The City’s aquatics team expects to have ample space for interested registrants, though signing up promptly is encouraged in case the program or specific age groups reach capacity.

The 2023 Junior Lifeguards program will take place June 19 through Aug. 4 at Carpinteria City Beach. Summer is right around the corner, and that means the City is preparing for another season of its popular Junior Lifeguard Program. The 2023 Junior Lifeguards program will take place June 19 through Aug. 4 at Carpinteria City Beach. Throughout the program, kids ages 7 to 16 will participate in fun activities aimed at building fitness, beach safety, and appreciation of the marine ecosystem. The cost of the seven-week program is $575, and the schedule is Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. This year, the City will offer a mini-JG program for ages 7-9, the regular JG program for ages 9-16, and a JG Safety Aid program for ages 14-16. Parks, Recreation & Community Services Department

The City’s Parks and Recreation Department is responsible for several activities including oversight of the City’s Recreation Programs, Parks, Community Pool, and Veteran’s Memorial Building.

The Parks division maintains and operate City parks with amenities ranging from children play areas and picnic areas to a rare salt marsh and walking trails.

Now Open!

The Carpinteria Skate Park is a new skating facility on the City Hall campus. It includes approximately 19,500 square feet of skating area, 23 parking spaces, 7,690-square feet of plaza/picnic area, 10,970 square feet of landscaping, and restroom.

Community Garden Park

Carpinteria Community Swimming Pool

The Carpinteria Community Swimming Pool is located on the corner of Palm and Carpinteria Avenues. The pool is open year-round with an average water temperature of 80°. Other on-site amenities include locker rooms, showers, and a Goggle Shop.

Junior Lifeguards

Carpinteria Junior Lifeguards is a summer institution. Junior Guards, ages 9-17, learn many aspects of life guarding as they engage in a variety of aquatic and beach activities.

Ocean Recreation Activities at the Boathouse

Rentals and lessons for surfing, kayaking and sailing are available at the Boathouse, located on Ash Avenue at the beach.

Dogs on Beaches

CMC 6.04.240 -Dogs prohibited.
It is unlawful for any person to suffer or permit any dog owned, harbored, or controlled by him/her to be on the public beach between Linden Avenue and Ash Avenue whether leashed or unleashed.

Located at 941 Walnut Ave, the Veterans Memorial Building offers several services to local community members.

Carpinteria Community Tennis Courts

The Community Tennis Courts are available to the public during the hours when school is not in session and the Community Pool is open.  Visit the pool to pay  and gain access.

Adult per person/two hour reservation – $7.00

Youth/Senior per person/two hour reservation – $5.00

Doubles per tow hour reservation – $22.00

Access Pass (20 Hours) – $40.00

  • Reservations open 7 days before desired  time frame
  • Maximum of one reservation per player each day
  • It is recommended that you arrive 5 minutes early to check in and pay hourly rate at the Carpinteria Community Pool
  • Players are required to lock gate after use
  • West court has tennis and pickleball lines
  • When reserving, ensure that the time frame you reserve matches the sport that you’re playing (tennis/pickleball)
  • To prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus, maintain physical distance at all times
  • Players must bring their own equipment, pickleball nets can be borrowed from the Carpinteria Community Pool office
  • No coaching is permitted without written permission from the City of Carpinteria
